We are seven handsome and charming* guys who meet at a different restaurant every month or so, having read a book in common, and discuss whatever we want--generally the assigned book, but usually many other timely topics as well. We rotate the responsibility to suggest titles, but the group has the final say. Our book club rules: 1) Anything goes, fiction or nonfiction; 2) paperbacks are preferred; and 3) staying under 300 pages is desirable (N.B., we violate this one all the time). We rate all books and restaurants on a 5-point scale.

* All other adjectives were vetoed.

In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick

The book about a maritime tragedy in the Massachusetts whaling fleet of the 1830s is a gripping tale of adventure and survival that prompted Melville to write his classic novel Moby Dick. The loss of lives and the desperate eating of human flesh made for a sordid, and widely discussed, story in its day.  Biaggio offered a more traditional menu for our book group. Good service and food in a quiet setting.  Our next book is Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander.  We'll meet on Tuesday, September 16, and Ron will suggest the next book.
