We had less than an hour to discuss the book online, but we raked over the book fairly well. Everyone liked it but had some criticisms, such as a paucity of examples to support the authors' arguments and the absence of concrete solutions or action steps to address our nation's problems. At Max's suggestion, we chose Victor Frankl's classic book, Man's Search for Meaming. Titles also reviewed were The Roosevelt I Knew by Francis Perkins and The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig. We agreed to meet on January 2 over lunch, place TBD.
We are seven handsome and charming* guys who meet at a different restaurant every month or so, having read a book in common, and discuss whatever we want--generally the assigned book, but usually many other timely topics as well. We rotate the responsibility to suggest titles, but the group has the final say. Our book club rules: 1) Anything goes, fiction or nonfiction; 2) paperbacks are preferred; and 3) staying under 300 pages is desirable (N.B., we violate this one all the time). We rate all books and restaurants on a 5-point scale.* All other adjectives were vetoed.

The Woman Behind the New Deal by Kristin Downey (Hoa Bien) 10/21/25
We met at a Vietnamese restaurant in a semi-quiet room and had a lively discussion about the bio of Frances Perkins. She lived an amazing life and, as the title suggests, not only dreamed up most of the New Deal legislation but acted to get it adopted as well. The restaurant was above average and the book was excellent. Our next book is Abundance by Derek Thompson and Ezra Klein. Other ideas were: Black Moses by Caleb Gayle, The Beast in the Clouds by Nathalia Holt, and Vision: A Memoir of Blindness and Justice by David Tatel. The next meeting is November 24 and Max suggests book titles.
