We are seven handsome and charming* guys who meet at a different restaurant every month or so, having read a book in common, and discuss whatever we want--generally the assigned book, but usually many other timely topics as well. We rotate the responsibility to suggest titles, but the group has the final say. Our book club rules: 1) Anything goes, fiction or nonfiction; 2) paperbacks are preferred; and 3) staying under 300 pages is desirable (N.B., we violate this one all the time). We rate all books and restaurants on a 5-point scale.

* All other adjectives were vetoed.

Berlin Diaries, 1940-45 (Mill Valley Kitchen)

Once again, Mill Valley Kitchen delivered the goods in top fashion, earning one of our highest ratings. The book, however, received spottier reviews, as most raw diaries would.  Fortunately, a relative of the author added a good helping of explanatory material which helps the reader to understand what and when events were happening elsewhere in the theater of WWII, and explaining the significance of many diary entries.  Nevertheless, the high status of the author and her prescience and understanding of foreign languages (she was Russian), offers many insights and make the diary an important document of the war.  Next book is The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout.  Other titles considered were The Whistler by Ann Patchett, and The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri.  Dick is up next to suggest the following book.  We'll meet on October 7 and have Thai food served at Roger's place.
