We are seven handsome and charming* guys who meet at a different restaurant every month or so, having read a book in common, and discuss whatever we want--generally the assigned book, but usually many other timely topics as well. We rotate the responsibility to suggest titles, but the group has the final say. Our book club rules: 1) Anything goes, fiction or nonfiction; 2) paperbacks are preferred; and 3) staying under 300 pages is desirable (N.B., we violate this one all the time). We rate all books and restaurants on a 5-point scale.

* All other adjectives were vetoed.

The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout (Roger's place)

While enjoying a dinner of Thai food, ordered from Bangkok Thai Deli, we discussed the Strout book and found that we all loved it.  In simple writing, almost recalling Hemingway's style, the author weaves a tale of a beloved school teacher who turns out to be flawed and even suicidal.  He coaches students to keep certain thoughts unspoken, and he keeps some of his his own actions a secret from his family.  The book is relatable, relevant to everyone, and finely written.  Maybe the top rated book in our bookclub history.  The next title is Profits, Prophets, Coaches, and Kings by Jared Diamond.  We plan to meet November 5.
