Caputo's memoir of his experiences in the Vietnam war is a classic account, bringing to life the vivid, gut-wrenching reality of combat in the jungle in late 20th century. The author's descriptions are blunt and his story is charged with life and death moral actions. We rated this book among the best in the history of the book club. And our venue also was also considered to be in the top tier. Our next book is Taiwan Travelogue by Shuang-zi Yang. We also considered A Walk in the Park by Kevin Fedarko, What We Can Know by Ian McEwan, and 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed by Eric Cline. We'll meet next at Holman's Table for lunch on Thursday, July 30.
We are seven handsome and charming* guys who meet at a different restaurant every month or so, having read a book in common, and discuss whatever we want--generally the assigned book, but usually many other timely topics as well. We rotate the responsibility to suggest titles, but the group has the final say. Our book club rules: 1) Anything goes, fiction or nonfiction; 2) paperbacks are preferred; and 3) staying under 300 pages is desirable (N.B., we violate this one all the time). We rate all books and restaurants on a 5-point scale.* All other adjectives were vetoed.
