Once again, nearly everyone agreed that the airport restaurant was a fine place for a meal and lunchtime discussion. Our book, however, went over like a lead balloon. It started well enough, but as the pages built up, it proved to be repetitive, slow moving, and without much character or plot development. A hint of a story turned out to go nowhere interesting. Our next book is Berlin Diaries by Marie Vassiltchikov. Other titles considered: These Truths, by Jill Lapore, The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver, Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall, Cool Machine by Colson Whitehead, and The Polish Officer by Alan Furst. Our next meeting will be on August 31.
We are seven handsome and charming* guys who meet at a different restaurant every month or so, having read a book in common, and discuss whatever we want--generally the assigned book, but usually many other timely topics as well. We rotate the responsibility to suggest titles, but the group has the final say. Our book club rules: 1) Anything goes, fiction or nonfiction; 2) paperbacks are preferred; and 3) staying under 300 pages is desirable (N.B., we violate this one all the time). We rate all books and restaurants on a 5-point scale.* All other adjectives were vetoed.
